Description

Pair of beautiful Savonarola chairs with carvings of lion heads on the arms and floral motifs on the back.
The Savonarola chair, named after the Dominican friar active in Florence, Girolamo Savonarola, is a type of seat typical of the Italian Renaissance. The Savonarola chair derives from the Roman curule saddle, as well as an X-shaped wooden folding seat, used by the king of Rome and by the magistrates, enriched with ivory inlays. The Savonarola chair is made up of eight or twelve wooden slats curved in a serpentine shape and crossed like scissors in the lower area, weaves that form the base of the seat. The top of the rods composes the straight armrests and welcome a backrest formed by a shaped wooden board enriched by delicate carvings.
